Growing Peaceful Families

Redirecting Children's Behavior

Five Week Course

The hands-on, interactive course teaches parents*
tools for positive discipline that work!

In this course parents learn how to re-frame challenges, address feelings compassionately, set limits, and how to understand misbehavior in order to tailor their discipline more effectively.  Setting their own individual goals, parents learn how to make agreements and design effective consequences to use when agreements are not honored.  They also learn how to build their child’s self-esteem and gain cooperation while becoming versed in win-win negotiating and problem solving.  After completing the course, parents can continue to find connections and learn in the Quarterly Touchpoints, or be coached individually.

The Parent As Coach Approach

Designed especially for parents* of teens, The Parent As Coach Approach, assists parents learn how to step out of the role of teacher and administrator for their teens, and step respectfully into the role of being their coach.  Inspired by the work of Diana Sterling, parents learn the seven ways to improve their relationships with their teens and support them as they grow into responsible, independent adults.  After completing the course, parents can continue to find connections and learn in the Quarterly Touchpoints, or be coached individually.

Redirecting Children's Behavior Workshops

These workshops cover a variety of topics and are designed to give parents* useful, practical tools that they can take home and begin to use right away.  Whereas the Five Week Redirecting Children's Behavior Course is comprehensive, each workshop spotlights a particular parenting challenge and provides parents with effective ideas in a supportive and warm environment.

*Although the word "parents" is used in the description of the various courses and workshops, they are all suitable for anyone who works with and loves children: grandparents, other relatives, teachers, health care professionals, and ministers.

About "Redirecting Children's Behavior"

"Redirecting Children's Behavior" is an approach to parenting and teaching based on the work of Alfred Adler, MD and Rudolf Dreikurs, MD.  Dreikurs is best known for Children: The Challenge and Discipline Without Tears. His description of The Mistaken Goals gives adults a window into the reasons why children misbehave, and from there understand how to positively discipline them in a way that meets their needs.

Kathryn Kvols refined this further in her book Redirecting Children's Behavior. In the late 1970's, Kathryn developed a five-week parenting course which includes tools for conflict resolution, building self-esteem, improving relationships, problem ownership, the use of natural and logical consequences, and win-win negotiation. The International Network for Children and Families, of which Kathryn is president, has over 1,000 instructors in fourteen countries.
