"Redirecting Children's Behavior" is an approach to parenting and teaching based on the work of Alfred Adler, MD and Rudolf Dreikurs, MD. Dreikurs is best known for Children: The Challenge and Discipline Without Tears. His description of The Mistaken Goals gives adults a window into the reasons why children misbehave, and from there understand how to positively discipline them in a way that meets their needs.
Kathryn Kvols refined this further in her book Redirecting Children's Behavior. In the late 1970's, Kathryn developed a five-week parenting course which includes tools for conflict resolution, building self-esteem, improving relationships, problem ownership, the use of natural and logical consequences, and win-win negotiation. The International Network for Children and Families, of which Kathryn is president, has over 1,000 instructors in fourteen countries.
